Lego 10221 Review: Super Star Destroyer
Set 10221 has achieved legendary status in less than five years from when it debuted and 2 years since retirement. Based upon prices for new, sealed versions, there are many out there that missed out when the Super Star Destroyer was in production and immediately kicked themselves for not picking the set up at retail prices.
One thing is for sure, the Ultimate Collector Series Executor Super Star Destroyer is worth the hype. The ship builds like many of the smaller capital ships such as the recent 75055 Imperial Star Destroyer. The first step revolves around plate stacking to create a solid baseplate, then moves on to a technic-based skeletal structure, interior, engines, and finally hinged plates that provided the armor of the ship’s exterior. But don’t let the familiarity fool you, 10221 is on a whole other level.
The baseplate alone measures over three feet in length, and the model only gets bigger from there. Because of the length of the Executor (four feet long by completion) the build never feels repetitive, despite the fact that you have a duplicate build for each half of the ship. There is bit of grinding as you build more than a dozen similar assemblies to simulate the city-like superstructure that tops the ship, but the payoff is immense. I love how recognizable and seemingly random the 1×1 clips, 1×2 grates, and other greebling look up close, but when you back away from the model a bit, you really appreciate the texture and complexity of that superstructure.
Overall, I think 10221 is worth the investment. I think it’s unlikely that Lego will release another version of the Executor anytime soon, so the value will probably continue to appreciate. Add to that an incredibly rewarding build and the sheer size of the model when completed. You do need quite a bit of display space for this model, but it is as impressive as Lego Star Wars models get.
